neoOMSI: OMSI 2 recreated in Rust

OMSI 2, recreated from scratch in Rust. Full compatibility with every map, bus and mod, on a modern 64-bit engine for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.

Early release, expect bugs.

What's different

An open-source reimplementation that targets the observable behavior of OMSI 2.2.032.

Behavioral parity

Community maps, buses, splines and scripts run as expected, without manual conversions.

64-bit engine

Multithreaded tile streaming, background texture decompression and no arbitrary memory ceilings.

Modern graphics

Native hardware acceleration through wgpu: DirectX 12 on Windows, Metal on macOS, Vulkan on Linux.

Cross-platform

Native builds for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, built automatically for every release.

Integrated launcher

Scenario setup, duty and timetable selection, vehicle previews and controller configuration.

Dedicated server

Host multiplayer sessions headless. Maps and timetables are simulated without a GPU.

Non-destructive modding

Add-ons live in a separate overlay, so trying and removing them never touches your OMSI 2 files.

Clean-room and open source

No proprietary binaries or copyrighted assets. GPL-3.0-or-later, developed in the open.

Regression tested

Automated tests guard compatibility, subsystem by subsystem.

Getting started

  1. Install OMSI 2

neoOMSI contains no game content. It plays on the maps, vehicles and files of an installed copy of OMSI 2 and does not start without one.

  2. Download neoOMSI

Get the build for your system from the download page and unpack it into a folder of your own.

  3. Choose your OMSI 2 folder

On the first start, point the launcher to the folder with maps and Vehicles. Nothing in it is changed.

  4. Drive

Pick a map, a bus and a duty in the launcher.

Inside neoOMSI. From picking a bus in the launcher to driving the route.

Choose a bus. Every bus in your OMSI 2 folder, sorted by maker, with its liveries and a 3D preview.

Questions

More in the FAQ.

neoOMSI is a free, open-source recreation of the bus simulator OMSI 2, written from scratch in Rust. It plays the maps, buses and mods of an installed OMSI 2 on a modern 64-bit engine with native builds for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.

Yes. neoOMSI contains no maps, vehicles or other game content. It reads them from an installed copy of OMSI 2 and does not start without one. On the first start, you point the launcher to the OMSI 2 folder that contains the maps and Vehicles folders.

Yes, with neoOMSI. OMSI 2 itself only runs on Windows, but neoOMSI has native macOS builds for Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and Intel Macs on macOS 11 or newer. Copy your OMSI 2 folder to the Mac and point neoOMSI to it.

No. neoOMSI only reads your OMSI 2 folder. Add-ons go into a separate Mods folder next to neoOMSI, or onto the Mods page of the launcher, so trying or removing them never touches your OMSI 2 files.

neoOMSI started as a fork of openOMSI and is now developed independently. Both are Rust recreations of OMSI 2 that need an installed copy of the game. neoOMSI is licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later instead of MIT and verifies its behavior against OMSI 2.2.032 with a documented process and regression tests.

Your maps, your buses, your mods.

neoOMSI reads them straight from your OMSI 2 folder and never changes it.
